Corrections for known variable stars
Last update: 30 November 2013
The Dauban Survey has detected a large number of variable stars (about 500) which are very close but distinct from a known variable.
In the majority of cases, this has a simple explanation:
- the known variable has been detected by a wide field survey with limited astrometric accuracy (such as ASAS, NSVS..). The coordinates are pointing at a significant distance from the variable. Fortunately there is a single bright star in the area, so there is no ambiguity on the variable identity. The Dauban Survey gives the opportunity to correct the coordinates.
- the known variable has been detected by a wide field survey with limited astrometric accuracy (such as ASAS, NSVS..) such that the official coordinates point in the middle of a group of star. There is no star at the exact official position. The Dauban Survey has detected which star is varying.
- there are two very close stars, and there is a mistake on the identity of the true variable in the official databases. The Dauban Survey has detected the true variable.
Here is a list of corrections that have been accepted by the AAVSO.
